Christianity took strong root in Aswan, and many of the tombs and tmples were used as chapels and churches by the copts. In many of the temples, the ceilings are soot-blackened from when peopel camped inside, and many of the religious images from the pharaonic period were defaced.
In the Tombs of the Nobles, the most obvious sign that Copts usurped the tombs is the presence of church arches and icons in the courtyars of some of the unnumbered tombs
The images are fainty Byzantine, pictures of the apostles and angels on the domes.
