The massive ruins here date from the 12th century, and were the chief house of the Cistercian order in Scotland. A number of Scottish kings are buried in the abbey church and grounds, including Alexander II and the heart of Robert the Bruce.
Inside the current ruins you can see the blocky, huge remains of an older church; the gothic tracery of windows and arches seems to be built around the original foundations. You can see the older, blockier tower from the west side.
