Nunraw was the first Cicstercian chapter house in Scotland since the Reformation, and was founded by Trappist monks from Roscrea Ireland in 1946. The estate was originally owned by the nuns from Haddington, and the area was known as “Nuns Row”.

The neolithic hill-fort of White Castle lies on the estate.
