Wallace Statue

We had a very leisurely walk through a very thick forest path to find this enormous statue of William Wallace. He looks like a Roman soldier — and is overlooking Trimontium and the Eildon Hills, facing England; watching for the next invasion, according to the people sitting beneath it.

One of the first things that I realized about our trip to Scotland was that everything worth seeing in Scotland is UP. I spent more time climbing hills, climbing steps, climbing…and this one is 246 steps up in a tiny circular staircase on the outer wall.

Bannockburn Battlefield

Culloden Battlefield

Site of the disastrous battle on April 16, 1746, between the underfed, tired, and badly armed Highland army and the English. This bleak, wet moor marked the end of the Jacobite rebellion under Bonnie Prince Charlie
